I have an general idea of how to do it but I have never do anything this big. The most I've done is change my battery, spark plugs, and the plugs on my wife's Jeep.

J/k. Always start by removing the negative battery cable to prevent sparking.

Changing the Alt. is a pretty simple job. I don't know for sure about a Geo Prism, but often times all you have to do is remove the belt, disconnect the wiring, and unbolt it. I would assume like most small cars that the alternator is on the bottom side of the engine, so you might want to get the car up far enough to work on it. Remove the Dust Guard. There's normally only four bolts, but these bolts can be a ***** to break lose. I life to spray them with WD-40 and let them sit about an hour before attempting to work on it. You're goin to have to do one of two thing to loosen your belt. If there's a bolt in the middle of the Idler(the one pulley with nothing attatched to it) you can simply put a wrench on it and loosen the tension enough to pull the belt off. But most Chryslters have a tensioner where you have to losen the lock bolt on the front, underneath the actual pulley, and then turn the tightening bolt(located perpendicular to the bracket). Once you get the belt off, remove the wiring harness(es) and unbolt the alternator. You might have to tap the bolts with a hammer lightly to break them loose. If you still have a hard time, try putting the wrench on the bolts, then tap the wrench with the wooden part of the hammer. Installation is the reverse of removal. Go to the library they have plenty of manuals.
Or the auto parts store sells them for 15 bucks.
You should not be even replacing plugs without a manual.

we've all changed the plugs on that jeep... slack the alternator belt, unplug the alternator, unbolt the alternator and remove, install new alternator, plug in new alternator, install new alternator belt, tighten to manufacturer specifications

yes ,,this is not to bad of a job,,but you have to take it out the bottom of the car,,i don't know why they made them like that,,just Chevy i guess,,but make sure the car is up high enough and make double sure it can,t fall on you,,after you pull the dust shield off you,ll see the bolt,s for it,,i hope his help,s,,also be sure and disconnect the battery cable before you start this job.,,,PS don,t pay no attention to the dumb answer,s you see on here,,there just kid,s .
