I know the honda should be faster as it boasts around 100 cc's more...however what are the real world results? which is more comfortable? more fun to ride? more forgiving? etc...

I have a 919, and it's a solid bike. The stock suspension is sub-par, but it has a great engine, handles well, and is fun to ride.

It's a lot cheaper to service than a Ducati, and it's very reliable so you're not likely to need to do much more than scheduled maintenance.

I've ridden both, and the Honda seemed faster because of the higher revs. (the Ducati redlines at 9000) However, when I'm on the Monster, and my buddy is on his Hornet, I'm faster. I'm 6' 160lbs. - the guy I ride with is a little heavier, possible why I can take him out of the turns.
The new S2R is available with1000cc's now also. So it should be quicker than my 800. Styling wise, - very similar, but I'll take the Ducati. As for parts, service and mods, the Honda would be the way to go.
I ride 2 up on the Monster all the time, My girlfriend is 5'11' and she's plenty comfortable out back for about 2 hours at a time.

How much experience do you have and what was your last motorcycle? The Ducati S2R is rather uncomfortable - no fairing, strange riding position, wide handlebars - but it's meant purely as an expert-level sports bike, it has zero practicality value but maximum fun value. The Ducati is a weekend toy and yes it is a bit expensive if you don't stay on top of servicing and maintenance. The CBR 1000rr Fireblade is a typical liter supersports bike but it's relatively forgiving and it has a particularly good quality suspension. So for me the Honda wins on practicality and affordability.
