You may try using a cross-over lan cable for P to P connection and connect it to the LAN ports of the two computers. WinXP will autodetect the other PC or if not go to control panel and configure your connection. You may also do this in win 98.
...hope this helps.

Direct cable connection is not supported between windows 98 and windows xp. Putting the old hard drive in the new computer and copying will work, but you might have to convert the file system from FAT32 to NTFS before it can read it properly. Don't format it, use the converter. Another option is to go to start, all programs, accessories, system tools, files and setting transfer wizard in XP. This will help you create a disk to make a connection between the two computers.

Windows 98??? Stop, please. It's really not worth the effort....pick up a legit copy of Win XP by just buying a Dell Outlet PC for under $ 200 and all your problems are solved. Sort by price and desktop and you'll be surprised what kind of deals you find....keep refreshing the page though because the good deals don't last long and they keep adding new ones. :)

there is a default back up system in the start menu. go to start, programs, accessories, system tools, back up i personaly have never used it so i don't know if it will work for what you are doing. if not put all the files you want to transfer into a winzip file and then put the winzip file onto a cd or floppy disk and then you will be able to open them up on the other computer using winzip.

If you still have the hard disk drive from the old computer, simply remove it carefully and connect it into the new computer as a slave drive and you can access it to transfer files that way.

Stack the computers on top of each other and leave the room for 15 minutes, turn off the lights and put on some Barry Manalow.
