It was a very bloody and horrible time. It's interesting in a way, I suppose, but not an era I wish to dwell on.

I love all social history, costumes, manners, food, etc.
The French Revolution is one of my favourites. Years ago, I read a book by John Elliot, called "The Way of the Tumbrils". He was a relatively uneducated man who also loved the revolutionary period in France, and this book kept a kind of diary of his travels to Paris retracing the steps of famous people during that time. Thanks to him, on my many visits, I saw the shop (still in existence!) where Charlotte Corday bought the knife with which she killed Marat; saw the very door through which Robespierre walked into his lodging and found the little church, like an oasis in the busy city, where the Swiss Guards are buried along with Corday and where Louis XVI's and Marie-Antoinette's remains were found. There is an altar at the very place in the crypt.
One good book is by Christopher Hibbert, but I can't remember the name. I also like the period immediately after the Revolution, and the characters of the Bonaparte family. I also visited Malmaison, Josephine's house just outside Paris, where she died. The Musee Grevin, if it is still the same as when I went, is a fascinating series of tableaux of French history, with much made of the Revolution (including Marat's bath); and the Musee Carnavalet in the Marais has a reconstruction of rooms in the Temple where the royal family lived at the end.
I don't know much about the Colonial Period; but there are many eras of history that I find fascinating.
The Costume Court in the Victoria and Albert Museum (it used to be much better) was excellent for clothing; so is the Costume Museum in Bath. I hope you manage to visit them!

Yeah it's pretty cool, although I like the world war 2 history more. It's so cool...
Have you ever read "In the reign of Terror" by G. A. Henty? That is a really cool book about the french revolution, I have it on audio book. If you haven't and you are into the French revolution you've got to read/hear it! Even if you are not into that time you would prob. like it, it's really interesting!

i'd agree that it was interesting... a time when men powdered their faces, wore wigs and had clothes that glittered as much as the women... interesting indeed...
