MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface and this is a collection of different instruments synchronized in such a way to give you rhythmic tunes that is instrumental in form. It is also used as mode of communication protocol for communicating between a musical device and pc or between two different musical devices. MIDI files are much smaller than MP3 files and cannot produce vocals since they are designed to produce instrumental notes digitally created by compter.
MP3 is also called as MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) layer 3 and is a a format for storing audio files in compressed format maintaining the audio quality. This file format can achieve compression levels anywhere from 10:1 to 12:1. You need MP3 decoding software to play these files. All modern day audio players support MP3 and MIDI.

a midi file is not an audio file, unlike an mp3 file. midi is a file that tells your computer to play sound information located directly on your computer's sound card, but the midi file does not contain any audio information on it, which makes it much, much smaller. an mp3 holds audio information, and is thus much larger than a midi file.
midi generally sounds like video game music from the 80s. it cannot contain any vocals or live instrument sounds. it's entirely computer generated music.

midi is a music format for composing music, all it records is the data of which note is pressed, how long it is pressed, and what sound set is being used. Mp3 files store the data of the actual sound as it is recorded. Older cell phone ringtones (the ones that don't sound real) are examples of midi files, whereas mp3's are the actual songs
