i know wiping the strings w/ a cloth would work, but what else would work?

Use alcohol swabs to clean them regularly. Then oil and such won't build up. You can get a box of 500 prepackaged wipes for a few bucks at a pharmacy. Incidently, this works well on any kind of stringed instrument.

I think wiping them might make them wear, actually...
It it's dry, I don't think it will do anything at all, but if it's wet there is a possibility you could bgin to erode away at the insides, causing not only a bad song, but a quick break.

Really, just avoid cranking them high. Bass stings are very durable, more so that a guitar.
If you are transporting them in a gig-bag someplace, tune it down so that you don't accidently bump it and tune it up.

The best way to make your strings last longer is to buy more expensive stings.

I keep mine for 5 mounts, hell $40.00

tune down about an octave after playing.
