Normally 3 months is the recommended amount of months to wait before changing synthetic oil, though depending on how much you use the vehicle it could vary from 1 to 5 months. Try looking on the back of a bottle of synthetic oil that you plan to use, it should say what it recommends. If it doesn't just ask somebody in the automotive department at where ever you buy the oil.

The length of time between oil changes, (commonly referred to as the drain interval) varies between oils and types of vehicles. However, there are a few general rules you can follow. The first thing you have to discern is whether or not you fall under severe service. Synthetics only offer longer drain intervals under NORMAL service. (note: most vehicles fall under severe service)
If you fall under severe service, you should change your oil every three months or 3000 miles, whichever comes SOONER. Under normal service, most synthetics should be changed every 6 months or 5000 miles.
Severe service is determined as ANY 3 or more of the following:
* Three or more cold starts per day
* Stop and go driving (such as in traffic or at stoplights)
* Extended driving at freeway speeds
* Driving in extreme heat (85+ degrees F.)
* Extreme cold conditions (under 32 degrees F.)
* Dry and/or dusty conditions
* Towing and/or carrying heavy loads
- heavy loads can include a full passenger load
* Short trips (under 10 miles)
* Extended idling periods
Other conditions may qualify you for Severe Service conditions, so consulting with your particular vehicle's manufacturer will give you the best information.
Never trust an oil manufacturer to say their oil can last 15000 miles or some other rubbish like that... Just read the back of a Mobil 1 bottle.... "Under severe service, follow vehicle manufacturer's severe service reccomendations."

I'm sure that there are many oil companies out there who would disagree with what I'm about to say, but the mileage is the only thing that matters with oil changes unless your talking about a car that's been sitting in the back of a garage for 4-5 years.

Synthetic oil is better gauged by mileage. But if you need to go by months you are safe to run your car for 6 months without an oil change with synthetic oil ... remember that synthetic is not a natural oil, it is created specifically for a cars engine. If you get curious, check the oil level. But 6 months is safe.

consumer reports says 8000 miles is okay.
They tested this on 200 NYC taxi cabs. They drove a sampling lot on oil changes every 3000 miles and the other every 8000 miles.
the results after 150,000 miles of stop and go traffic? NO DIFFERENCE.

miles driven is the only factor i would consider in changing any type of oil in a car, unless of course you just start it up and rev the motor every day for a few hours
