Yesturday I came out to find my side window blown out and a neighbor said it was possibly caused by heat(it was a hot day here in the northeast). Its a 98 Ford. I am 42 years old and I have never heard of this nor has it ever happened before.

It also happened to another car in my parking lot of my condo.

Is this common? And if so does it happen in the southern states?

If your windows were tight and you left some liquid in the car (open water or soda bottle) which could evaporate, it could happen. With just a bit of vapor pressure in there your whole car probably became a giant pressure cooker and blew out that window. It happened once to me with a soda bottle that exploded at my feet in a hot car. Fortunately my feet were up, so I only got cut a little.
Probably people in Arizona and the Southern states have learned to leave their windows open a crack.

I am an ASE certified tech and YES heat can make this happen. I have seen it happen personally twice in my 30 years of fixing cars that aside I would look at the vandals route first this is a rare occurance and usually on dark paint jobs as they retain heat more

Yes, very common especially if you leave the windows all up in the heat. Heat expands and places pressure on the glass and it just blows. Has happened to me with 3 different vehicles. Think I'd learn to leave the windows down a bit after awhile, wouldn't ya? But no..........

yes it is beginning to be a popular thing this year,,especially with the heat index going up the way it has been,,if you leave your car always, leave the window cracked at least 1/4 of an inch,,today,s car,s are much tighter than the older one,s was,,and this is the cause of this,,it has happened a few times here where i live too,,so don't feel bad,,hope this help,s you.

a pissed neighbor. maybe a nut shooting off a gun a few miles away. what goes up must come down. I owned a shop in Richmond VA and came to find one day, bullet holes on the tops of 2 cars in my lot one day. perfectly straight up and down, like somebody shot off 2 warning rounds into the air. inspect your upolstery very carefully for new holes
