I agree with the last poster.
You should have the students doing something interactive. If you are bringing in a fireman, you'd want the kids to be able to see all of the equipment a fire fighter wears to go into a fire and maybe a couple of different fire extinguishers to explain the difference.

Its nice to have someone that has experience in the field that you are studying about to be able to come and talk about what their world is really like and be able to answer questions for the students.
If its an older grade, you might even ask the students to write down a few questions about that area of study so they are prepared when the guest speaker arrives.

BTW, if you are doing high school level, you might consider bringing in a speaker that does battered women's speeches, these might not be on the study list but the lessons this type of speaker can give your class will be remembered long after the class is over.

I'm a student, and I would say for the most part no. A lot of times they are not on the same level as the students. They talk their lingo that involves terms and ideas unfamiliar to someone outside of the field. Many times they do not have experience talking in front of a group. I am not sure what age group you have, but high schoolers seem to not be respectful to guests. However, for the elementary level I believe the kids really enjoy those types of figures, but the guests should know to expect all kinds of questions from the little guys.

Theoretically, you'd think the students would love not having to listen to you for once, but I haven't really had good success with outside speakers. It's one time when I truly realize that not just anyone can walk in off the street and hold a classroom of 38 teenagers enthralled. Most people just don't know how to speak to kids/teens in a way that interests them.

If you still want to try it, I'd find someone YOUNG, no older than 30, who has experience in talking to kids/teens. That should significantly increase the probability of having a successful guest speaker situation.

It depends on the guest and the grade ... the person needs to be looking for audience participation, especially for younger students. The saying "a dark room is a happy room" only works for movies, so your guest needs to be interactive, focused, and audible.

Take your class into consideration before you invite someone, and make sure that they have some prior knowledge so they can come up with some questions that they are excited to ask.

depends on the lecture. I have had some very dynamic speakers who relate to the kids well and others who are just painful for me to watch let alone the kids.

of course they do. You should ask them who they would like to come and speak and then try to arrange it so then they would be even more intrested.
