Oh Bill, don't make assumptions about someone being a kid by just looking at their aviator. You don't know rumman so that was a bit presumptuous. I agree with him that this years team was a major disappointment - I expected or wanted to expect more but frankly wasn't too disappointed or shocked by their outcome. I do hope that by 2010 Freddie Adu and some of the up and coming starts are on the team because I think they'll make a difference. As for the name of the game....regardless of where or when it originated, it is pretty silly to call soccer football when what is played and called football in the US rarely ever sees a foot. And I agreed 100% about the poor commentary done by ESPN. There was only one WOMAN on there that half the time seemed to know what she was talking about. The two guys that were making the commentary during the game sounded like a couple for former wanna be star soccer players who somehow thought they had a right to stand in judgment of players who were way out of any league they ever played for. Football is a fantastic game that requires ten times more skill, talent, and stamina than any of the more popular sports played in the US. I agreed that our guys to some extent looked like a bunch of hip-hop dancers that forgot they'd been invited to the ballet. They were simply outmatched and outclassed. Team USA needs a new perspective.

I am not an American. I just live in USA and it sucks to have to be here and not get anything of Football. They've been saying soccer so much that I say Soccer sometimes. Anyways, the reason that Americans look like sissies running for the beauty pageant is that they play really simple football. The cause of that is the ignorance of people to football. They basically do not care about it and probably never will. They think that football is really boring (especially watching it). Well from what they see on ESPN, it would be boring because the only games they show is the "American Soccer" and they play really boring and you literally sleep through the whole thing. What Americans should see is real football. Like European League games and Euro Cup. They do watch WC but that's not nearly enough. They need to see those games to find out that football is not boring after all.
What really bothers me is that Americans don't care about football but yet, they always want to change things about it. For example, in the past they tried to change football by putting 5 minute breaks between 15 minutes of playing. Well I wouldn't call that football because that's what it's fun for. They tried to make the sport lazy like they're own Football and baseball. I mean if you don't care about a sport, then just stay out of it. Don't interfere.
I agree with you. They should just stick to their football and baseball.

Dont you think you are being a little harsh? Listen to this, please: Some Americans...actually no, most Americnas...are, awful, awful, incredibly stupid, arrogant, ignorant people. But not all of us are. And as far as our soccer team, they just play football, they dont spoil the sports dignity no more than England fans or Zidanes heatbutt or more than any thing else really. Yes, the country does sometimes mock football, and believe me, it pisses off the Americans who love and appreciate and understand the game more than it does anyone else in the world? You think we all like this reputation we have? How is it awkward if people commenting about football are American? Fans are fans. There are people in Europe and South America that dont know anything about the game, and there are people in the United States and Canada and loads of places where the football isnt very high quality that still know a lot about the game. And believe me, no one, and i mean NO ONE, was more pissed off about ESPN/ESPN2/ABC's commenatry decisions...because they werent just bad, they were an embarrasment to the networks and the whole country. And yes, I know its football, not soccer. I dont even know where this whole soccer business came up. In "american football" they hardly ever touch the ball with their feet, it doesnt make any sense. Anyway, those are my thoughts. Oh wait, one more thing: any country, especially any member of FIFA, has the right to play football and the right to qualify for the tournament.

It's standard fare. There is a right of passage to be accepted, not just admitted, into the world cup. A few slaps on cheeks go along with it. As an American I'm fine with the snubbing and take it in stride. To me it says, you are worthy of criticism. That was never true before. US football (soccer... whatever) has come a long way and there is still much ground to cover. If we had a more meteoric rise to the top it would be criticized as a flash in the pan. This is a slower, more steady improvement, year by year. All in all, the interest is improving in the states, and the interest in the US team abroad has also increased. This is good for football. Although I agree that the rhetoric is unnecessarily rough on both sides... but that's not unusual... there aren't any riots yet that I'm aware of, so it hasn't matched up with a contentious league match in the UK as of yet.

Maybe this will help. Italy are the champions. The remaining 31 teams aren't. Even "mighty" Brazil who went out like a candle on a windy day. And you might tell us why a British publication refers to the game as "SOCCER" while it is marketed to it's populace. American football was established before International football, and an Englishman, whose last name was Brown, came up with the word "soccer" because the world wanted to be different, not the United States. And finally, you don't hear Americans wanting a rematch because their team lost. Get over it. Learn to spell. Get your facts right so you don't look like a sore idiot, okay Junior?

America shouldn't be allowed to be a member of FIFA, because FIFA stands for Federation International de Football Association. Notice there's no "Soccer" in the Organization's name?
They have to change the term Soccer to Football if they still want to play in FIFA's official tournaments.
But if they change Soccer to Football, what will they call American Football? I don't know, maybe Handball? Because the seldomly use their feet in the game (except for running and sometimes kicking) and use their hands most of the time, I think Handball is good.

the game itself is not easy, requires a lot of running back and forth in such huge field. It could be very frustrating. I stil think America is not so bad being able to be qualified in the FIFA World Cup considering the fact that soccer is not the main sports in U.S.A. Practice more!

i dont think you'll ever be able to get rid of football in the united states...or rather "soccer". people will always love the sport even if the country will never be able to embrace it.
i think what should be changed is the attitude of people in the united states about football. they should realize that its a world sport and they should really stop bashing it. when you talk trash about a sport so big around the world, youre just asking for enemies.
