I would say Killzone or Black Killzone has an ecellent story and could have very well rivaled halo but it is on the ps2 and there was no co op Black is excellent and harder than hell but again it is a ps2 game and the ps2 is horrible but the game falls short because of no co op and no online killzone has online but it is so horrid

This might not count as a shooter, but I'd say that it's Metal Gear Solid 2.
edit: Oh. In that case, I agree with the guy below me who suggested Black.
