Depends on the manufacturer. Volkswagen switched from 6 to 12 in 1967. But they were way late, and in fact probably the last manufacturer to switch. All American cars were standardized and converted to 12 volt by 1957, although some were earlier. But since there's a veritable cable guy's buttcrack full of other manufacturers around the world, it's hard to say when all of them did.

1952 Chevy was a 6 volt, so it was after 1952 for american, I seen a answer said all were 12 VDC,none sense some are even positive ground bet they did not know that, late 50's some foreign car lasted longer like theVW's did it longer, they just did not totaly stop it was a slow transition, and great question, i have a book that i could get it for you but some MFG they all did not change at the same time

Most domestic manufactures had changed over to 12v by the late 1950's. foreign manufactures lasted until the mid-sixties.
This question is to general to give a specific answer.
I had a 65 beetle with a six volt system.
Pick a specific manufacture and I'm sure we can answer this for you.

seem on the battery if it has 3 filler holes that is 6 volt if it has 6 filler holes that is 12 volts. each cellular on your battery is two volts and each filler hollow (the position you upload the acid )is a cellular.

General Motors changed in 19 55 and Ford changeed in 1956.so did Dodge

Not sure, but it almost had to be 1958 for Chevy.
