i dont think anyone will ever know for a fact what is was for, many have studied it and have their own conclusions, but i do kind of sway toward the conclusion that it may have been used as a kind of calender because in one study they said the sun sets directly in the middle of the fromations on the start of different seasons and when i saw stonehenge the sun set between two of the stones on june the 21st wich is techinaclly the first day of summer.

Yes and no. From what we know, the primary purpose was as a place of worship for druids. That said, the druids relied heavily on the sun, moon, and stars to tell them the date on their calander which was ultra important to their belief system.
Therefor it also served as an astronomical observatory.
