The explosion, as reported by eyewitnesses during that time and what scientists have collected and analyzed, was from a large meteorite that exploded about 6 km in the atmosphere. There have been other accounts that Nikolai Tesla was testing his Tesla Coil device and was going to show it off to Edison and some others and had sent an arc of lightning to the Siberian area causing the destruction. That may be a bit far fetched but is good for a nice story.
