She has worked at the company for a long time and she sucks everybody in to gossip with them about everybody else. She is very insincere, has low esteem, and seems insincere. The times I've told her things that I knew...I now regret because I think she could be a backstabber. How do I keep my distance from her without her thinking something is up? Today I tried to do that and she came right up to me and asked if I was having a bad day. It was like she felt a difference in my very energy. Do I just keep things civil and stop giving her info?

Why do you have to put up a front? You can either say something direct or just not talk to her. If she starts telling others about it, hopefully they'll understand.

Every place one works, there will be gossip. I too, at one time or another, am guilty of being sucked into the vacuum of idol gossip. But like you said, you feel bad and regret it after-wards.
So, anytime someone wants to gossip about another person, I just smile and change the subject. This quote by Eleanor Roosevelt is the main reason I have changed my gossip ways:
"Great minds discuss ideas, Average minds discuss events, Small minds discuss people"
Print yourself up a plaque with that saying on it, leave it on your desk where everyone can see it...then maybe they will think twice about chit-chatting to you with their gossip!
Have a good one!

In every workplace in America there is a person like her. Keep smiling, tell her everything is fine and she will stop bothering you. However, she will then go to other people and talk about you. But, these people, who know you most likely won't believe any of the rubbish she spews. If you catch her gossiping about you, you should confront her head on. Most gosips are terrific bullies who crumble when confronted. Continue to be yourself, and honest. That's the only way to fend off a gossip.

My mother developed the perfect way to deal with overly inquisitive people: She never responded to gossip with anything stronger than, "Well l l l l l ........" Find your own response. Then the gossip can only say, "and she said, Well." And you can also develop an incredibly defective memory. I've noticed that my brain just siezes up whenever somebody tells me something about someone else.

Thatis why she gossips because of her own insecurity. She doesn't feel good about herself, so she talks about others to try to make herself feel better.

Be polite to her, say hello and so on, but just stand clear of her as far as any type of conversation.

Yeah, chances are good she is a backstabber.
It's not easy when it's in the office, BUT you will get used to it. ;)

Cut that highschool bullshit. Her only social life is probably in that office thats probably why she acts like that in the first place. Tell that ***** to **** off. You are just there to make your damn money and afterwards go on with your business, let her save the drama for somebody who cares.

Just dont tell her anything personal and keep your distance. If she is doing that then she is obviously immature and hasnt grown up yet.
