Clean Air is not the result of a liberal or conservative agenda. Ultimately, it is a right due the American People. There are those on both sides of the political spectrum who understand the importance of clean air and clean water. And I don't think conservatives and liberals are that far apart on the need for these things. The differences arise from who pays for the programs necessary to maintain clean air and water.

The current Administration does not view these issues as priorities and instead has favored the concerns of big business to the detriment of clean air, water, and earth. Short term profitability is more important to some Americans than clean air, water, and earth. I truly cannot understand why any American would accept this, but we do.

Fist off I doubt that the clean air we now have is solely due to the efforts of liberals. I suspect both ends of the political spectrum (and the middle most of all), are needed to effect change in our country in the area of environmental protection.

The way politics works today is with both parties giving a little on one congressman's personal pork project in order to get another to vote for his or her own pork project. Mutual back scratching on the behalf of parties results in all sorts of compromises that can be spun as progress in Washington.

Secondly, I still get peeved by the whole red/blue dichotomy that is being forced on us. If the liberals are so mad about the conservatives forcing this nation apart and against one another why to THEY always wave around the idea of one party being RED and the other BLUE. To me this is the mentality that divides this nation. This is what is really what is hurting us. The Democrats spot any difference (some contrived) and then alarmingly point the finger at the Republicans and accuse them of dividing the nation. From there on, all debate is over and it's just bitter name calling, irrational accusations and hearsay.

Oh please. Clean air isn't part of the "liberal agenda", hypocracy is! There aren't that many Democrats AVOIDING the SUV? AVOIDING the suberbs and long drives? Do they let their teens drive? That waste gas and increases pollution. Do they buy their kids cars instead of making them take mass transport, which will, again, save gas and decrease pollution.
I have not heard any alternatives from the left. They talk and talk, but be damned if they will W-A-L-K.
The stars who whine about the environment while flying around in private JETS.

WHAT A LOAD.

But, the last purposeful change to the Clean Air Act was sponsored by Mike Oxley, an Ohio conservative Republican.

From the Toledo Blade
"To be sure, Mr. Oxley went to Washington 24 years ago with great expectations — his and ours — and in his early years on Capitol Hill, he pushed for many of the same Reagan initiatives that The Blade supported.

Although he was in the minority for his first seven terms, he worked well with the Democratic majority and helped craft several pieces of major legislation, including the Clean Air Act of 1990."
