I think it is safe. I'm not 100% sure on this but check side effects. I think Valerian may interfere with birth control pill. If you aren't on birth control pills then I'd say you are in the clear. You may want to try chamomile tea though. I think it works very well. Also melatonin tablets that you can get at drug or health food store work well too.

I can not believe that people are answering by telling you to take drugs. Valerian is a herb not a synthetic drug with side effects and yes it is safe, if there was even a question about its safety the FDA would pull it from the shelves. Come on, look at the warnings on Tylenol pm that someone is recommending, then look at the warnings on a bottle of Valerian, you won't find any.

Valerian should be safe.Chamomile also works. It basically helps you relax. But if you really need sleep, Melatonin is a natural hormone that is produced by our body to help us sleep. Try taking the tablet or capsule supplement for 3-4 nights to get you back in a sleep cycle. Don't overuse it because then your body will decrease production of it. It's best that you determine WHY you can't sleep then tackle that.

Valerian root is fine but even better try Melatonin. Your body produces this naturally but as you age it produces less. It is perfectly safe with no side effects and no grogginess in the morning. You can purchase it at Wal-mart or any nutritional store. It is very inexpensive. Take only one tab approx. 1hr. before bedtime and you will fall asleep naturally. I use this almost nightly.
Give it a try!

I have cured insomnia without Valerian or any over the counter sleep aids. I use alternative medicine and it worked for me. I have slept every night now for 4 months after undergoing years of insomnia.

Valerian is dangerous if you have liver problems. Many people have undiagnosed liver problems such as hepatitis c, and if valarian is taken, can cause serious liver damage or fulminant liver failure. Be careful; just cause it's an herb doesn't mean it's safe. Try a glass of wine if you're old enough, or warm milk (yes, it works) if you're not.

No 'over the counter' pill is safe. Try a product from any good healthfood outlet, one I can recommend is a product called "GoodNight", and I can say you will have a good nights sleep. You only require a small glass of GoodNight and before long you will be yawning, next thing you know its time to get up.
Good Night!
