I've been offered some tulip bulbs in an Dutch invesment deal which sounds pretty good. How much should I invest? I just work backstage and haven't got a pile of capital.

Doesn't sound like a very good investment to me. Don't spend your pile.

You should invest a total of $0 unless

(a) you have money to throw away,
(b) you have a profound knowledge of the Dutch tulip bulb market, which gives your investments assymetrical information (information you have which other investors don't) or
(c) the investment partner is someone you thoroughly and completely trust

In other words, walk away from the deal. It's likely some sharp operator is trying to scam you out of your money.

Best wishes and God bless.

Yes investments do go up and down. The point of investing if for long term use such as retirement. The key to investing is continue to invest each month until you retire. You want to accumulate as many shares as possible.

I started investing at age 22 and put in $100/month into my Roth IRA. My Roth IRA contains 3 mutual funds I picked and they are doing pretty well on long run (they averaged out of 12% in past 20 years).

You should consider the elements of risk as well as return. Again this depends on how much you can afford to lose and the accuracy of your information. An alternative is to invest in more than one commodity, known as a portfolio where you will be minimising the element of risk.

Invest only what you can afford to kiss goodbye. This sounds like a high risk proposition that may have a high payoff or may crash and burn. If the details sound reasonable to you, try it if you have capital that you can risk this way.
