My Memorex DL burner (rated 8X for -R dvd's) will not record on Sony AccuCORE 16X media
Any ideas
Firmware is up to date as is my Nero software

If you get an error message try switching your DVD media from one brand to another.

In most cases, sure. Media and writers OCCASIONALLY have compatibility issues, but the faster media should just burn at the slower speed of the burner. This could be one of those cases where the media simply isn't compatible. OR it could be that the current firmware has a problem with that media.

you could write better than once on a disk. doesn't remember if its write once or rewritable. you could't close the disk or finalize the disk. in case you closed the disk better than in all probability you probably did then your stuck with a million gig on the disk. A 16x disk ought to always artwork on a 8xcontinual as ought to a 8x disk on a 16xcontinual.
