I wouldn't say matter becomes autonomous because of a sort of "divine intelligence". What allows us to walk is the same force that drives a seed to sprout. It has been called many names throughout our history, God, the anima mundi or world spirit, aether, nature, the astral light, magnetism...People always disagree on exactly what it is, but we all can agree that there is a force which inhabits us, and that it is different from our soul, which most people associate to being that which guides us and is the key to who we are. Most of us can comprehend how tiny we are in comparison to the universe. I think that the soul is merely a tiny piece of this universal spirit and it earns its own identity through chance and circumstance as it moves through the material world. Probabilities upon possibilities. It is an individual when at the task of leading us through our lives, but this is mostly illusionary. Our individuality is the aether being changed through cause and effect. Each of us are unique, but not always of our own volition, and we always revert back to whence we came.

Life generates life. The very spark of life that is inside us, animals, plants, etc... is what joins the female and male genes. That fusion starts an "evolving expansion of matter" powered by the change reaction of energy (spark) until the matter is producing its own spark. Thus, birth starts, life starts, and the process of growth and individualization begins.
