I basically need to know what sort of information a 6-12th grader is supposed to know about the United States' part in World War 2, particularly for an Illinois citizen. How are questions worded and what facts have to be learned? What are the basic ideas that need to be learned?

What I've used for my home schooled children is Core knowledge Sequence 1st- 6th grade. I've given the book away so I can't tell you exactly what facts it covers. For my son who's going into 11th grade, we're using a combination of High School Subjects Self Taught (now out of print. I got ours from e-bay). A Literature Approach to U.S. and World History by Rea C. Berg (www.bfbooks.com)

I don't know about a lesson plan, but try buying or renting a British TV series called The World at War. It was made back in the 1970's and is considered to be pretty much the definitive work on WWII. It covers all aspects of the war and goes into a lot of detail. The series is available on DVD.

Each state will have its own standards to teach from, I teach in Florida so these are Florida's Sunshine State Standards. Standards are listed on each state's department of education website.

Objectives for students to learn:

Explain how Hitler's theory of Aryan racial domination laid the foundation for aggressive expansion outside of Germany.

Specify how the actions and ambitions of Japan and Germany paved the way for the outbreak of World War II

Discuss how World War II left a lasting impression on civilian populations.

One lesson could possibly have students researching in small groups the roots and results of anti-Semitism, Give each group an area to cover such as: history of Hebrew people, world reaction to Nazi treatment of Jews and so on.

I would start by looking at the link below.

How many deaths there were-
How much money was spent-
What were the affects of the war-
How it brought the US out of the Great Depression.

A great way of teaching the kids would be asking a couple veterans to come in and tell the kids what it was like. You could ask each child to come up with 5 questions to ask and be responsible of asking one in class. From there, have them research what their question was about and write a one-three page report.
