Paraguay, officially the Republic of Paraguay (Spanish: República del Paraguay), is a landlocked country in South America. It lies on both banks of the Paraguay River, bordering Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. The countries capital is Asunción. Asunción has a population of approximately 1,639,000 (2002). Its metropolitan area, named Gran Asunción, includes the cities of San Lorenzo, Fernando de la Mora, Lambaré, Luque, Mariano Roque Alonso, Ñemby and Villa Elisa; having more than 1.5 million inhabitants.
I hope that the above information sufficiently answers your question.

Asuncion, or, as it used to be called by the Spaniards originally, "Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion". It's nice there. Has a great atmosphere, somehow like Seville, but cooler ("cooler" as in: more adventurous). It lies beside the River Parana, which some people bathe in, though I'm not sure if I would (interesting animals there). It's a good place to hang out and chill for a while if you're on a tour of South America. Excellent barbecue restaurants, good shopping, and quite safe. Sighh... I so want to go back there some time...
