Windows updates defender once a month ..It is with the other critical updates.

I check for updates by opening up defender and clicking the down arrow beside the question mark, then click about, and click check for updates.

The anti-spyware software microsoft releases tends to be slow. If you want alternatives to spyware remover, spybot (http://safer-networking.org) is a very good one. Free.
