I would say Stephen King's "The Stand." Sci-fi-ish, fantasy, yet with a very realistic overtone and some of the things which happened in the book could very easily happen tomorrow or the day after. You can't put it down once you start reading it. It's King's masterpiece work.

I don't know about the best book, but the most frightening novel I've ever read is "Fatherland" by Robert Harris. It is a murder mystery set in Nazi Germany... 1964.

My favorite authors are John Grisham and Robert Ludlum.
