My grandmother used to say "If If's and Ands were pots and pans, there'd be no work for tinkers" There is no work for tinkers so are If's and Ands, pots and pans?

She did not see the impending fast food revolution which greatly reduced the need for pots and pans. This was the tinker equivalent of the potato famine and many thousands of tinkers died , ironically surrounded by many empty pots and pans. Their dying words........"IF only.."

Either the saying morphed or your grandmother's wrong. I've always heard, "If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, it'd be Christmas every day."

On a different level, you're utilizing some sort of logistical fallacy. Your equation is If A, then B. You're trying to jump to Not B = Not A. Doesn't work that way. I think there's a name for this - if I'd paid attn more in school, I might know what it is....but even if I did know, it wouldn't necessarily mean that I paid attn......

no the logic is not neccessarily reversible e.g just because there are no tinkers doesnt mean that its and Ands are pots and pans.

Your Grandma was very wise...for her time. Unfortunately nowadays, we just buy new ones instead of taking them to the Tinker.
