Ok, say I tuned the Low E (to standard tuning), how would I go about tuning the rest of the strings?

I remember learning that I would hold fret 5 on the low e string and it should have the same pitch as the A string. Is that right? And then fret 5 on A and that should sound like the D string. and fret 5 on the D string, and that should sound likethe G string. Then the 4th fret on the G string, which should sound like the B string. and finally fret 5 on the B string to sound like the High E string. Is that all right?

thanks

Yup, that's correct and you can use the harmonics also.....5th fret E match to 7th fret A until you hear no wavering at all. THis works with all strings except the "B" string for that, harmonics on the 12th fret "G" string and finger fret the "b" string on the 8th fret

harmonics are played by lightly placing finger directly over the actual fret bar and making the string "ring" a tone.

You are absolutely correct! What you might want to do is get an "E" tuning fork or pitch pipe to get you started on the "E". Also, you might want to play around with other tunings as well. Many great songs were made with alternate tunings (early Blues for example). Guitar giants such as Jimmy Page, David Crosby, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Joni Mitchell and John Denver (to name just a few) all constantly fooled around and wrote with alternate tunings. Alternate tuning is very common in Hawaiian Island music as they call it "slack key" guitar which gives that unique "whiny" aloha sound. It will make you many new sounds, as well, and keep your guitar playing friends guessing on what chords and how you are creating the new sounds that you are playing.
