The only way I know how to stop it and go back to the playlist or menu is to pause the iPod and click the top button that says Menu. I'm not sure I exactly understand your question. You could also try rearranging the songs in your library/playlist to your likings if that is the problem...

You can't do it without hitting pause, then menu. The makers figured, why bother including a redundant button?

Um, the only way that happens is if you finish listening to the last song on a playlist. Otherwise, just press pause and then menu. I don't see why you need the entire thing to stop...

i think you just keep arrowing right or left untill u get done with the playlist thing.
then it just goes back to the menu.
