Doris Lessing - The Grass Is Singing and African Stories
Romain Gary - Les Racines du Ciel (I don't know if there is a version in English, if so it should be called something like The Roots of Heaven - great novel!)
The best novel I've ever read, actually, IS Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness!
Less demanding but a good read: John LeCarré's The Constant Gardener
Anything by Wole Soyinka or Breyten Breytenbach....

A Danish author named Isak Dinesen (the pen name of Karen Blixen) wrote a memoir called "Out of Africa" - that's where the movie came from. She lived in Kenya from 1914 - 1931.

The playwright Athol Fugard based a lot of his work in South Africa. (It was a novel he wrote that was the basis for last year's Best Foreign Film Oscar winner, Tsotsi).
John Coetzee...he won the 2003 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Nadine Gordimer (Southern Africa): a white woman, still writing.
She won the Nobel prize for Literature in l991. Has written 14 novels and 11 short-story collections. (Born in l923).

"Something of Value" by Robert Ruark; Set in contemporary Kenya during the time of the Mau Mau rebellion which were the last years of British colonial rule.
