Monitors aren't like video cards.
One that works for spreadsheets will work equally well for games.
I suggest you look at things like picture quality, price and size when choosing a monitor.
Get away from your keyboard for a while, and go to the stores, and see which ones simply look good and are a good size within your budget.
LCD monitors however just as a side note, don't always work well for games because of lag that causes ghosting.
If you are going for an LCD monitor, there are many factors you have to consider. LCD's are of course always more expensive though, so on a budget, you likely won't be considering them.

I agree with supertech, the CRT monitors (Space heaters as I like to call them) are hands down the best bang for your buck when considering a gaming monitor. The flat screens are better for gaming (flat screen means the screen is flat and not rounded like older crt's or TV's but the monitor itself is still a CRT).
But if you are looking for a LCD (flat panels) then you definitely need to shop around for what your budget allows. For gaming an LCD should have at minimum a 12ms refresh rate, 8ms is better which is what I use and have no visible refresh lag in most games. Faster than that and it's a matter of how much money you are willing to spend. definitely compare monitors in person before buying because two similarly specced monitors from different manufacturers will look different when put side by side.
Edit: If budget is a real concern, check out www.craigslist.com and go to your area. Lot of people that upgraded to an LCD are selling their older CRT's for cheap. Can usually find a 17" for around $50 or less.

I think your question should have been, What is the best video card for gaming?
Monitors do have some variations which make them better for gaming, but now days those differences are few. When it comes to a monitor it would be best to buy a flat screen, (most are these days). You also want something large enough to display details without causing eye strain. I would suggest 19" or higher.
When it comes to video cards your options are limitless. Some things to keep in mind is that games are requiring better graphic cards for every new generation of a game. The best thing you can do is buy the best you can afford, because over the next few years it will become obsolete due to game upgrades.

Don't get a monitor get a HD TV or regular TV. I have my computer and gaming systems hooked up to my 42" Sony plasma TV and the sound and video quality are awsome. Monitors are out dated any way. All you need are the right cables to do the job right.

I would suggest a 17" or a 19" (or larger if you want)Flat Screen CRT. Either from ViewSonic or Samsung. I still believe CRT's provide better imagery compared to LCD's especially on fast moving objects in your screen and also it can deliver pure white or pure black colors.
