My sister is moving to NYC soon. I live in CT and all of my friends in NY live in Manhattan. She's got a list of names of places to look for apartments and I am concerned that she'll live in a bad area just to save a little on rent. Can I have some input on: Astoria, Sunnyside, Long Island City, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Red Hook? Thanks

OK so here it goes..... No Queens, No Brooklyn, Some parts of the Bronx is cool. No where near the six line because its too ghetto. Umm, manhattan is cool too. But Not above 135th because it's too rhowdy. The 4 line in The Bronx is cool but some parts are bad. It's too damn big for me to be specific. Well just tell her to stickto 100 street down in Manhattan.Thats safe. Long Island is cool. Anywhere you go it seems to be da same.

Queens is great....Sunnyside is a real young committee, pretty trendy. Astoria has a big Greek population, but I am not sure about how the area is. Long Island City is right near Astoria, my friend works there, it seems to be a pretty industrial like area.

For really nice homes and apartments or condos, I recommend Flushing, which is growing substantially. It also has a great little Chinatown, and some damn good restaurants. My fiancee's family lives there, and they live in a really nice neighborhood....almost like the suburbs.

I'm sorry I can't help you with the others. I know the South Bronx is not safe at all....off the Cross Bronx Expressway, stay away from there at all costs. There are some nicer places in the Bronx like around Pelham Parkway off the Hutchinson Parkway. But that is more north, closer to Westchester County (and CT for that matter!)

I could be wrong, but I believe Williamsburg has a big Orthodox Jewish population...but that's all I really know about that area (I think).
