I have used softlan comfort etc but they do not do what they state.

Use Borax or some washing soda. this gets rid of smells . Or you can go to 'Winipeg Free Press' and type in Make the most of household superstars. this gives you a whole list of items that are need to clean the home. You want 'Sunday, July 9th, 2006' issue. Good luck.

cant beat putting it on a washing line and getting that outdoor fresh smell to me unless your unfortunate and live in the city in which case all the products being reccomended here cant be that bad

I'll sum it all up with, most fabric softeners do the trick. Look for something on the label, use one of the previously mentioned things, or try something of your own idea.

Downy with Magnolia and Orange Blossom or Tide that has Febreze in it.

Try to catch a fairy and imprison it in your washing machine. In a bid to earn freedom the fairy will do what you need. They need changing every 50 wash cycles.
