Have air-blown the board, fans (which are working ok), no viruses, spyware etc. I use p2p often but even when not in use, it still shuts down, especially when using USB file transfer to external HD. Anyone have any clues. Have not changed my usage/software (xp pro) habits and this problem has only recently started. Would appreciate some ideas please.

What do you set it on when you are using it? Remember, your laptop vents are under the laptop, and need airspace to let off the heat. I would suggest a flat surface, maybe a glass table top, to quickly dissipate the heat.

You need to find out if it is a hardware problem or a software problem

Firstly check the event viewer - goto the control panel then adminstrative tools - then click on event viewer- click on the system - look for any errors - also look at the application again see if there are any errors - these can give you clues

if you find any error for any thing - do a search on google for it - or IM me if i'm online then i might be able to help (or email me with the results)

also get in safemode - when first startup keep on tapping f5 or f8 then select safehmode - leave you computer in this mode for a while - still have shuts down - then you have a hardware problem

if not it will be a software problem

come back with the results

As is the case with summer temperatures, it may just be seasonal. Have you tried any of the laptop coolers? Even the little $19 plastic ones where all they do is lift it up off what ever it is sitting on for better airflow seem to do the trick.

If you are still in the same (temperture wise) environment as before then it could be a hardware issue with the MB, CPU or memory. Check with the manufacturer to see if this is a common issue with your model. it may be something they have seen before.

I have a Dell laptop with the same problem. If the fan hasn't blown yet, it probably will soon, mine did. I would get it serviced cos there's obviously something wrong (unless you're wrapping it up in a jumper while you use it!)
