If you want to be a glorified secretary and do simple, basic accounting plus general office duties, go with that two-year degree. It won't be challenging work, but you'll make a living. If you have plans to move up in the corporate world or want work that makes you think, go for a four-year degree.

As someone who teaches accounting at a Community College, I can tell you that I've had plenty of students who have landed good jobs in accounting, including Accountant.

Yes, a Bachelors degree does move you to a higher level and possibly more money, just like a Masters takes you a step further, but basic training in Accounting is generally sufficient.

If all you had was bookkeeping, then Accountant is probably out. But since our program includes things like bookkeeping, auditing, financial statement analysis, etc., there's enough to say to an employer that you have solid accounting skills beyond bookkeeping.

I would suggest taking a look at a website such as salary.com and looking at what Accountant I and II do. This gives you a good idea as to the training and level of education they tend to require.

I have learned that you can do or get anything you want if you want it bad enough, no degree necessary. You just have to show that you will do whatever it takes to get the training, its all about hands-on experience in the long run. Offer to work for free, stay late come in early, any good employer wants to see motivation and drive. Don't be afraid to start at the bottom, just remain focused on the big picture.
