Do you believe generosity should be forced upon someone, or do you think it should be an individuals choice to give what they earn?

charlooch, maybe you don't know what being a liberal is all about. Maybe you shouldn't claim to be one because your favorite movie star is one, but liberals are pretty much socialists. If you don't realize this, maybe you should reconsider your political views.

I can only go by what you write. And what you've written clearly shows that you don't understand what's going on with so-called "generosity". If you think that the collection of money from 'haves' and the redistribution of that money to 'have-nots' is forced generosity, then you are sadly mistaken. We don't give billions of $$$ each each to nations around the world because we are such "good guys". No, we give it only so we have the ability to take it away. Our government is the biggest drug pusher around the world. Our drug we push is $$$$. Get em addicted, then we can take it away. Formation of dependency is the superior form of control. Such methods can easily be applied on the domestic level, and currently are. Take welfare. You probably think this is some bleeding heart liberal program to make Dems feel good about themselves. IDIOT! They're part of the government, too. Dems want control of their people, just like republicans. We're all self-serving. Just some of us are smarter at achieving it than others. generosity? Give me a break.

The way you word this is odd. Generosity being forced on someone would be me giving you $1,000,000 and telling you that you have to take it. I think what you mean is that I would have to be generous and give you $1,000,000.

It shold be an individual's coice unless they make so darn much that they buy 20 HUMMERs. That money could have gone to charity.

Oh, and why is this just a question for libs? Are you admitting that reps are tightwads who would never consider giving anyone a dime?

Your questions should be directed at Reds. Please do not confuse the two.
Why are you so negative towards red opinions and liberal thought? Would it really be so bad to help one another? I think maybe you have forgotten that it's part of being human to want to help others. And who wouldn't want to live in a class-less society?
Maybe it's just me, but I think if you are capable of earning more money or living somewhere decent, than you should have some compassion and empathy and want to give what you can. And if you are lacking that piece of humanity, then yes it should be forced upon you.

What has that got to do with Liberals? Taxation is what keeps this country going. but it is certainly out of balance now. Because some one got into office gave tiny tax cuts to the poor ,and big ones to the wealthy, then took on a long war in two Country's, and is considering assisting another ,besides keeping the illegals out. are you going to give by choice to help him out? with out being forced? I am a liberal and poor I would be willing to take a cut in pay, if the Republicans would take the same percentage of their income.

I'm not a liberal, but it does depend on what you mean by "generosity". I believe in what our government already has, i.e. public schools, welfare, social security, etc. that provides a common denominator of basic needs within our society. I'm against anything past that, though.

BTW our war with terrorism has been determined to be in our national interests, which makes it most definitely a necessity and not "generosity".

First I would like to take issue with csucdartgirl I am a Latter-day Saint (what she calls a Mormon) and we are not mandated to do anything. There is no enforcement squad, no one checks over your financial records and besides if you read the book of Malichi(last book of the old testament) Chapter: 3 verse 8 to the end of the chapter. it is call thithing and it is a commandment of God so why don't you get your facts right before you go smearing someone's belief. Secondly I think that it is funny that when the tax burden is lifted charitiable donations increase. Let me give to whom ever I think is best and big government BUTT OUT!

Nicolas, you need to be much more specific. Obviously, if one receives a call soliciting money for a charity, it is up to that person what they give. I have a feeling you are referring to money from our income taxes and business taxes which go to different types of welfare in the US. Basically, I think the well to do and middle class should have some responsibility toward those in need.

Where conservatives and liberals part is on where and how that money should be spent and how much should be spent.

you sound like you hate taxes. you also sould like you harbor a sense of entitlement that comes more easily to rich people lucky enough to be born into a superpower's boundaries than it does to anyone else less fortunate... of course generosity should not be forced on anyone. the government and the people that provide for you your safety and your comforts and your well being are not asking for (your) generosity. they tend to seek egality and justice and fairness and simply all of the items they are due. owners of things sometimes are dependent on the caretakers of their things, and so, should go slowly when tempted to look down their noses upon such caretakers. jesus had a few things to say about this.......

I believe generosity is a subjective term. And forcing anything is wrong in most cases.

Shouldn't you be asking this to mormons? They require a 10% of income donation mandate.

In an ideal world where people aren't greedy and selfish the individual's choice might work. Since that doesn't appear to be possible, bring on the tax deductible rebate.
