He's in a tropical set-up and I don't have a spare tank! If I put him in a jar won't it need heating too?

I don't want it, but in the meantime, put it in its own container. You can fix up any glass jar and it will be fine until you can find a home for him.

Male bettas are generally pretty peaceful with non bettas. In large tanks I've had more trouble with them being picked on. (Some fish just can resist the long fins when the betta goes for air.)
I'd grab your largest jar, fill it with tank water, and put him in there. If it's a gallon or less you'll need to change the water every 4 days or so. Bettas are easy to keep on their own. At the very least it will be a place to keep him until you find him a home.
