Work for yourself as a consultant. Get you some insurance, business cards, and get the word out. Lots of smaller companies use individuals when they need them instead of hiring a full time person. It's a lot cheaper for a small company, and there are a lot of small companies out there to work for.

There are plenty of people who do independent consulting, work for non-profits, work in government, and even work in education.
For example, I worked in the corporate world for a number of years, did some consulting on the side, and now teach.
