well it's not a text book, but I think every pysch. major should have to read the series try these:

A Child called It
The Lost Boys
A Man Named Dave

All are by the same man Dave Pelzer
They are worth the read, they will make you mad and want to hit something, they will make you hold your child closer(if or when you have any) and they will make you less tolerant of those who claim their problems stem from a horrible childhood.

Dibs: In Search of Self, and Play Therapy, both by Virginia Axline.

I'm a big fan of Carl Rogers, too.

The Compassionate Beast (I forget the author).

Anger: The Misunderstood Emotion by Carol Tavris (or anything by her).

The Languge Instinct by Stephen Pinker.

The suggestion of looking in the psych section of the library is good (also bookstores).

Fascinating subject, all right.

Have fun!

PS: Ohhh! I second the Love's Executioner.

If there are colleges near you, check out used bookstores near them. (Used bookstores, because they're cheaper and have more variety.)

Avoid textbooks.

Also, there's gotta be lotsa stuff on the web.

There is no such a thing as a GOOD book. Books and good should never be used in the same sentence together.
Never mind, I just don't have patience to read. But you can learn a lot from books.

Please Understand Me is a book about personality types. In the beginning there is a long quiz to determine your type, then the rest of the book tells you how different personalities deal with others and situations. It is not dull or boring like most psych books and you are involved by the quiz, so it is interactive.

Just go to the psychology section of your local library, that way you will find something to your level. There are lots of different branches and views in modern psychology.
