Back to the same car. I have since replaced the idle air control valve. It helped the low idle problem. However now it races. The low idle has been solved, yet the engine races when started and in gear. Any ideas?

Well, it's a Ford...there's your first problem right there. Every Ford owner I've ever know has had nothing but trouble with their cars. I'm living the horror right now; my wife has a Mercury (a Ford, in disguise) and it's really just a giant, steaming heap of $hit with four wheels attached.
Want my advice: Don't even bother fixing it. Something else will break on it next week...and the next week...and the week after that. Just sell the piece of junk while you can still get a few dollars for it and buy a Toyota or Honda.

You didn't say if all the time or what....

If it's a 2.0 may suspect the PCV line going into the intake under the car.... Some mechaics will also adjust the throttle up to get them things to idle without a shake and may be some of your problem...

If it's a 2.5 look for broken vacum lines on top...

and the imports are crap also sometimes.. ask how many people swore off imports when they had to pay numberous times for vacumn leaks that were hard to find and diagnose

Yeh, the Contrast and Mystake. Check for vaccum leaks. Probably dry rotted vaccum lines or a bad MAP sensor. Good luck.
