Hoover WIndtunnel with the bag and the Sears version always rate at the top in consumer reports. They're $300. For $150 you can get the Eureka Boss SuperVac was rated a best buy by consumer reports as well. For $70 is the Hoover Tempo which is the best "cheap" vac.

I have a Pomeranian and a black cat that shed like crazy. The Dyson Animal (purple) get up the hair and embarassing amount of dirt and such. I have also noticed that there isn't as much dust around the house and my allergies aren't as bad at home. They're pricey, but great - I've had mine for over a year, vacuum about 3x a week & the suction is still as great as the day I bought it.

My wife has had a house cleaning business for 15 years and says the Kenmore is the best dollar value. The motor runs strong but the only thing that wears out is the electrical connection between the top handle and the pipe. When that happens, I buy a new pipe from Sears that comes with the connector and that fixes the problem for another year or two. Her's has fallen down a flight of stairs and still runs strong.

If you can afford the best vacuum cleaner I know of, invest in a Rainbow Vacuum Cleaner. These have a water container on the bottom into which the dirt goes because "wet dirt can't fly." Also, not only does the beater brush rotate rapidly, but it is also designed not only to rotate, but also to "beat" the carpet. Everytime I have used a Rainbow, it looked like my carpeting had been professionally steam-cleaned. There is no water that gets on the rug, though. It is only in the container to catch the dirt and dust and immobilize it so that it is not rethrown into the air. Rainbows are the best!

Invest in the best there is. Get a Dyson.
Best vacuum ever made, no joke. They're expensive, but well worth it. I wouldn't trade mine for 10 of any other vacuum in the world.

Dyson is the way to go. Best vacuum I've owned, hands down.
Here's a tip - buy it at Bed, Bath & Beyond, and use the 20% off coupon - that's how we got ours. The coupon says Dyson is excluded, but it's not.

Oreck or Miele.........
Dyson are ok if you do NOT have allergies. Dyson's are baggless. Allergies???? then get a upright with a bag .
Vacuums with a bag esp canisters will always outperform any upright bag less or bag for that matter.
Central Vacuums are the best....$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I've been using an ORECK for almost 9 years, now.
I've had hoover, electrolux, kirby - won't do those again.
Oreck has been the best for me, so far.
