I used to work for a well-known store that sells printer cables and was privy to knowing how much it cost the store to buy different kinds of cables from different manufacturers. The cost difference to the store between a regular cable and a gold-plated one was only a couple of bucks. The markup to the consumer, however, was outrageous. The regular one might be marked up 40-50% while the gold-plated one would be marked up 200-300%. I would think that if a cable with gold-plated connectors was really that much better, it would be costlier for the maunfacturer to make and in turn, costlier for the store to buy. But that's definitely not the case. I agree with SuperTech - unless the price difference is a buck or two, it's not worth the extra expense.

RE:
Is there any real value in using gold plated usb cables on a printer?
I know computer stores love to sell them because of the obscene markup...

Gold is a high profit margin item, but it does have a function. Gold does NOT tarnish and therefore the contact between the cable and the PC or printer will not degrade over time.
I've seen cheap cable corrode over the span of months where gold plated will last for years.

Initially, not much.
However, over time, since gold doesn't oxidize the way most other metals do, you will get lower resistance connections, which will maintain certainty of maximum speed transfer.
Oxidization can lead to resistive connections which may not be able to maintain maximum speed, or lead to retries which also decrease speed.
Gold plating though should not drive the cost of a cabe u by more than a dollar or two though. Don't get taken in by high priced cables that base the price on the gold contacts alone.

The end of the USB cable that goes to the computer is universal. Printers and other external devices use a different connector on the other end. As long as the connector going to the printer is the same between models, it will work.
