I don't know about nursing but as a pre-hospital care giver the significant effects would be job satisfaction which would lead to a happy household; providing a community service and prehaps saving lives.

This answer obviously is a very personal perspective.
I would guess that, for me personally, 3 significant effects are:
1.) Completing something I started - accomplishment
2.) believing in myself enough to go through with it - self-esteem
3.) Feeling like I am making a contribution to humankind - fulfillment of a goal
