I have a SmartStep 250N. First of all, I turned it on and it said "Operating System not found." I took out the hard drive and turned it back on and the screen was blank. I hooked it up to a monitor and the screen was blank. If I put a new hard drive in it, will it come back to life? Or do I have deeper problems?

You will need to reinstall the OS. Try making sure the RAM slots are secure and they are pushed in all the way, one time they weren't and the computer returned that error.

Looks like the hard drive is bad. Or maybe it's just the boot sector got corrupted. Try booting from your OS CD and see what it has to say. It should tell you if the C: drive is accessible or not. If the drive can be accessed then it can be repaired. I image my C: drive once a week so I won't lose anything. I don't store data on the same drive so I won't even lose a weeks work. I might lose a couple of bookmarks but who cares.

This Is what I'd do(not the best way but safe).

1. Install Windows(or what ever) onto a new drive.

2. Install the old drive(bad?) into an external 2.5" USB enclosure. If the old drive is good you should see all your old partitions with new drive letters after you plug it in.

Does the drive fire up to where you can see all your files? If yes. Then there are repair utilities fo fix it so it can boot again. Or you can copy your data onto the new drive. There are many things you can do. Fortunately I never had to do any of them.

The reason the monitor didn't work is some video cards require an OS with a driver installed to activate the external monitor jack.

It may simply be that there just wasn't an operating system on the hard drive.
You haven't specified if it was woring before, and this suddenly happened, or if you purchased it this way.
You may want to try re-seating the RAM, but at least put the original drive back in to see if that is why the screen is blank.

If you took the hard drive out... you won't see anything. The Operating System is installed on the hard drive. If it isn't finding the Operating System you might want to reinstall it.
