One of those new Toyota cars, I hear they're great on gas.
My son just bought a 1996 Cavalier, v6 with a custom air intake...actually it's not bad on gas milage.
Ford Rangers are good on gas too. They're actually buit by Mazda and are really reliable...more so than your average Ford.

This is a huge decision. I'd recommend something larger than a compact... consider even a mini-van. Sure, it might not be cool, but you have wheels and that's what matters. I once listened to a radio show talk about your question... their answer came down to a Volvo! Evidently they are built for safety.
