By "pics" I will assume you mean your Icons. Just right click on the ones you wish to remove and hit delete. This will not delete the file only the Icon. If you wish to remove the file you must go into remove programs, do this only if you are sure you want them removed.

I have no desktop items at all.I keep only the most used ones in my task bar. When I want to see my desktop I click on the task bar and there are my frequently used programs and to access other programs simply click on the start menu and everything else is accessible there.

To get rid of your desktop shortcuts for a short while, do this: right-click on the desktop, select "Arrange icons by", then uncheck "show icons on desktop". If you ever decide to put them back, just do the same thing, and they'll be back.

I suggest simply making a folder for them, and drag/drop all the icons you don't want on the desktop into that folder.
This is better than simply deleting the icons as they are still accessible (in the folder) if you need them later.
