Make sure you drink plenty of fluids including cranberry juice. There is also an over the counter medication called AZO which can be used for any pain you may be having, but this can only be used for a maximum of two days. Urinate frequently and completely to empty your bladder each time. Avoid soda, coffee, alcohol- anything containing citrus juices or caffeeine until the infection has cleared. Avoid any type of feminine products like sprays as they may irritate your urethra. If you are sexually active urinate after every encounter, and make sure you wipe from front to back. Also cleanse the area before sex.

There is an analgesic that works on the urethra called URISTAT®. It is an over the counter version of a commonly prescribed medication called Pyridium. (shame, shame on the doctor for not offering it to you) You can take as much as 200mg three times a day with meals. It will make your urine discolored so don't freak when you see orange urine. Good luck.

Actually you can speed up the healing process by drinking lots of fluids, number one, and with that drinking plenty of grape fruit juices like Cranberry juice, orange juice, etc. The juices have acids in them that help attack the UTI and pave the way for a speedy recovery of the infection, hope this helps!
*Take the nurse's advice, she included more info than I did!

The medicine the doc prescribed should make it painless in a matter of hours.
There something over the counter called Uristat. It makes your urine an orangish yellow, but it works a little faster.

I gather your doctor did not prescribe pyridium. I don't know why not. It makes you pee bright orange, but it takes the symptoms away immediately. I would call my doctor back up and ask him to phone in a 3 day prescription (that's all you need, cause the antibiotics kick in then).

Usually people will recommend that you drink a lot of cranberry juice. There are some over-the-counter pills you can get at the pharmacy too.

LOTS of cranberry juice, and AZO tablets work pretty quickly. If they gave you that prescription that turns your pee orange (I don't remember the name of it!) it should start working almost immediately after your first dose or two, so don't worry you won't suffer for much longer.
