Prompted by seeing an entry from The Beleiver - come on, at least spell your name correctly! I know its pedantic, but I yam what I yam!

Hey, Believer - sorry, Beleiver - you saw my question! Cool! I'm glad it reached you.

As Nigel Tufnell said, "there's a fine line between clever and stupid". I guess you are straddling that line in an ironic way. Good for you.

You do know that's not how to spell unique though, don't you? Heh heh heh...

It makes me laugh that a 4th grade teacher has mis-spelt in his answer. That's "tendencies" - no wonder kids have problems!

Uh, people have forgotten ALL language rules. They don't know to/too/two, they don't know your/you're, our/are. On and on and on. It's yet another indication of exactly how poor our public education system is.

Because English (a combination of several languages?) is such an inconsistant language when it comes to grammar, phonics, and spelling , we really shouldn't call them spelling "rules" but spelling "tendancies".

When I'm teaching these subjects to my 4th graders, I always show them the "rules" but then show them (or they always seem to find) the seemingly endless examples of exceptions to these rules. Imagine how frustrating it is for an English language learner!

I believe so. And most of the time it is not a typo either. I do know I make mistakes too but English is not my first language. Have typed my last Q with a mistake (has instead of have).
Too many times I see "Their" for "there"
"its" for "it is".
Accommodation has 2 c's and 2 m's.
Weather and whether are completely different words.....
pregnant is not preggies. :-)
Grammar is not grammer.....

etc....
To conceive is not "consieve"
etc....

But......looking at my "own site"......I am equally dismayed noticing all the mistakes too.......:-)

"Except in the cases of neighbor and weigh..."

English spelling is so irregular that such rhymes help. But the best thing is to a) use the spell checker and b) get used to spelling things correctly so that you can spot something that "looks wrong."

Everyone seems to have lost the desire or will to spell properly. Just look at this website! We need a special dictionary to translate.

ur = your or you're
looser = loser

I have no college degree, but my primary school years were in the 1950's era. They taught us how to spell!

Well sometimes it's not a matter of spelling. People do make typos. Granted they should do the spell check.

Most of the people on this thing can't spell. What are they teaching in our schools?

LOL

I wish you well my fellow crusader.

I suspect that many weren't listening when the spelling rules were read out.

Very true. But isn't "weird" an exception. Dictionary.com says "weird" not "wierd." And "their." So, it is not a hard and fast rule, is it? Our elementary english teachers lied to us.
