Bugsy Malone - it's a depression era gangster musical with an all kid cast including a young Jodie Foster. Or as someone above said - "The Blues Brothers" is excellent.

I was against musicals for quite some time, but it kind of cracks me up that characters just burst into song and dance in the middle of conversations

Singing in the Rain - a classic worth it's reputation
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Also love the Nightmare before Christmas

Newer musicals would include Bride & Prejudice & Moulin Rouge...both favorites of mine.

Older musicals...Sound of Music, Singing in the Rain, My Fair Lady, The King & I, South Pacific, Music Man, State Fair, Camelot, Oklahoma...

Ok, before I answer, you really should know that the
best Musical of all time is.......

THE BLUES BROTHERS
(we're on a mission from God)

not just because of Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and other musical greats...but because it has the best chase scene of all time and because Carrie Fisher DOESN'T shoot Jim Belushi, and he leaves her in the mud.

That said...

If I were going to put in a Musical right now, it would be the Music Man, because I've been dying to hear Lida Rose.
(Lida Rose, I'm home again, Rose...)

Yeah, Rent rules and I don't even care for musicals all that much. In this case I fell in love with the soundtrack. So I own both the soundtrack and the DVD. Great music, songs and acting.

Victor Victoria is a pretty cool classic. Chicago, Rent, Phantom of the Opera, etc ... V V is my favourite, with Julia Andrews as a woman pretending to by a man pretending to be a woman ... very fun.
