Sorry ICON, it was Plato, not Aristotle. Although, he supposedly heard it from Aristotle. The story had been passed down by word of mouth from another Greek named Solon. He had supposedly gotten the story from the Egyptians who had a map of Atlantis engraved on the wall of a temple. Archaeologists have discovered an ancient inscription which may be the very one that Solon saw.

The current theory is that the civilization from which the legend comes centers around a number of Islands in the the Mediterranean Sea. There was a civilization which has come to be known as the Minoan. It was so named by Sir Arthur Evans, who excavated a large palace on the Island of Crete. He named the Palace Knossos and dubbed the Civilization Minoan after the legendary King Minos whose palace he thought it was. (This was the King who kept the Minotaur in the labyrinth). It is possible that this palace my have been the capitol of the Atlantean civilization. Another important Island in the this culture was Thera, known today as Santorini. It sits on an active volcano which erupted, wiping out the Therans and causes a tidal wave which swept over Crete, destroying the Minoan culture.

There is ample evidence that the Minoans were a very advanced seagoing civilization. Most myths have their basis at least partly in fact. Scholars are finding more and more evidence of these factual bases.

There are of course other theories about where Atlantis might have been, but this is currently the most logical.

The truthful answer is historians are not sure. However, Aristotle made more than one reference to Atlantis in his writings. They were considered to be a powerful nation, with many advancements over other countries in arts, craftsmanship, engineering, technology and warfare. It is theorized that they existed even before Mesopotamia and Babylon. According to the most recent data collected by the History channel and the Discovery channel, Archaeologists and Historians believe that Atlantians resided in what is now the Mediterranean Sea. They also believe the what is now the island of Crete and a few other small islands are the only remnants left. It is thought that what is now known as the straights of Gibraltar used to be a land bridge. At some point in time the tectonic plates beneath western Europe and northern Africa shifted destroying the land bridge causing a massive tidal wave that flooded the Mediterranean and Atlantis as well, wiping most of it off the face of the planet.

Probably, yes. I actually red translation of Plato's Timaeus and Critias and I don't think that he would go that far inventing the story just to prove the point. Completely agree with Ereshkigal on everything, but there are few other locations to be considered as potential Atlantis. Namely, the size of the island (as described by Plato) was enormous. One of the theories is The Bimini Road in Caribbean, another possibility is sunken island just off the Straight of Gibraltar, The Azores or sunken plato off the coast of Ireland. There is still no solid proof for Atlantis existence, but many scientists do believe it existed in some point in time.

no one knows, or knows where it would have been if it did. Some think it was a small island in the Mediterranean. Not many people really think it was some advanced society with space age stuff though. That's science fiction

Yes, I think so.

My eight year old daughter seems quite positive that it is located beneath the surface of the ocean in the middle of the Bermuda triangle. I have no clue WHY she said that. It was really quite a random statement from her one day. LOL
