I don't know of anyone who is offended when others speak Spanish to each other. Someone, myself included, might be offended if they walked into a store in the United States and the cashier or server couldn't speak English to them. Many people, myself included, are offended if someone who chooses to live in the United States does not also choose to learn the predominant language, which is English.

If I decided to move to Spain/France/Italy, I would expect to have to learn Spanish/French/Italian. If I did not do so within a few years, I would expect people to be somewhat impatient with me.

To the nasty "Germaine" person who posted above, I've reported your abusive language. I'm not sure you will care about this but people who post to this forum are looking for helpful answers to something that is bothering them. Become part of the solution rather than being part of the problem.

It's primarily a matter of manners. When you speak a language that they don't understand in front of someone, it's considered rude. It's akin to whispering in someone's ear and giggling, when other people are around.
It's considered good manners to include people in your conversation, even indirectly. So when you are around other people, it's more gracious to speak English, if that is the predominant language where you live, and speak Spanish when you are not in a public place.
The reverse would hold true in Spain or Mexico -- people would not deliberatly exclude others by speaking in another language.
The exception to this rule is tourists. People who visit a country for ten days obviously can't be expected to learn the language, but even then, it is considered polite to learn a few phrases in the language of the country you are visiting. Simple things like hello, thank you, could you please help me, I'm looking for...
etc.
Yo tambien hablo espanol.

Because I think it is rude and impolite to speak Spanish among people who do not understand the language. If you can speak English why not speak it. On the other hand, if you wish to gabble in Spanish inside your home, have a ball. I'm an immigrant myself and the first things I did when I first came to this country is to learn to speak the English language and embrace the American culture. People who are not comfortable with that should go back where they came from.

The US is one of the only countries in the world that speaks only one language. People get mad and say "if you want to come here learn to speak English" what's the problem? What's wrong with having 2 national languages? IE; Canada Maybe it would teach tolerance of other cultures as well as help us all communicate with the rest of the world. Spanish is spoken in 26 countries. (not just Mexico)

For the few haters here. You make me laugh. I live in NYC. I hear Hebrew, polish, Russian, Spanish, french. All kinds of languages. I think its great that there is a vast mix. I think your brain is too tiny to accept that. In any case. I think the real reason you hate is because in 50 years your grandchildren will be speaking Spanish too. And another thing. We really do speak English and we really speak Spanish just so you wont understand what we are saying. Pendejo'

If you're going to live here, learn to speak English! Hell, even when I went to Germany for just a few days, I at least made an effort to learn enough of the language so that I wouldn't be completely out of touch. Besides, if you learn the language, it helps you get a job, avoid getting ripped off by unscrupulous shopkeepers, and allows you opportunities to participate in the American culture. If you're here illegally, go home. If you want to stay in this country and be a part of its grand society, at least learn to speak rudimentary English! -RKO-

I don't get offended when you speak Spanish I do however get offend when people come to our country to live and don't know how to speak it. If you just visiting and cant speak the language that one thing, but if you going to move to that country and you cant speak the language thats another. If I move to another country you better believe I would have a firm understanding of their language before I packed a single box.

Years ago my aunt and family moved to Mexico. None of them spoke Spanish, ENGLISH only. When the children started school they were made to LEARN Spanish from English speaking teachers. Why ?
Where I live in the U.S. Our children (US citizens) are being taught Spanish so they can communicate with non-English speaking Spanish children.
If anything non-English speaking persons need to be taught ENGLISH.

If you live in another country, where English is not the first language... what do you do if you meet there a friend who speaks English like you?

Will you speak in English because you feel more comfortable speaking in your own language, or, will you keep speaking the country's language because would be rude to talk in English in a foreign country?

Let me guess... You will speak english because would be more comfortable for you.

Immigrants don't speak in their own languages here just because they want to talk bad about you Americans, or because they want to be rude. Inmigrants talk in their own languages between them because is more comfortable for them.

So please don't judge us wrong! And yes maybe our grammar is not the best. But we speak more than one language.

I lived in Puerto Rico all my life, many Americans there always talk in English, Puerto Rico's official language is Spanish. So they don't care, they keep talking in english. So, why immigrants here cannot talk in their own languages? Because is Rude? So you stop being rude in other countries then. You cannot ask for what you don't give!

So you dude, when you go to any other countries speak their language. Don't be Rude, Impolite and Idiot!

I live here in USA and I can talk your language, that does not mean I will speak english 24 - 7. In fact I speak 4 languages and I will speak them when ever and where ever I want... "free speech" Remember?
