When Hideki Matsui broke his wrist, a Red Sox fan informed me and was beside herself with glee. I understand the rivalry between the two teams, but something is wrong when people celebrate someone's misfortunate. Before this occurred, I routed for the Red Sox when the teams played eachother. Now, I root for the Yankees.

I'm neither a red sox or a yankees fan. I understand the rivalry. And Red Sox are rationalizing behavior for celebrating someone's misfortune. Sportsmanship extends beyond the playing field.

To be the best, to be a champion, you have to not only beat the best, but, beat the best at their best!

"Your" fan wasn't much of a baseball fan...

Whats wrong with you .. if your a fan, its not "sportsmanship" .. And sure when somebody gets hurt you feel bad for the person, but if your a REAL fan, inside you are happy expecially when its a rivalry like that, or a contender in the same division ..
now if you were at a game where they were playing the Rays and Crawford got hurt and this fan was happy, yea theres something wrong with that, because the rays are not a big threat to anybody ..
So bottom line: That is an act of a real Sox fan .. But what ever you do do not switch over to the yankees fans side who Boo's their own team,or players, when they are slumping .. that is an act of a bad fan, Which most of Yankees fans are.

Come now, As a Red Sox fan, I should explain. I'm not going to wish a terrible injury like that on ANYone, even a Yankee. I'm not happy that he got hurt. However, I am pleased as punch that a great Yankee player is out for the rest of the season. If he suddenly decided to retire or move back to Japan to be with family or something, I would be just as excited.

Sportsmanship is a hallmark of amateur sports. When money is involved, especially big money sportsmanship goes out the window. I see nothing wrong with cheering for Matsui breaking his wrist. It's hardly a life threatening injury. People want to win. I'd cheer harder if one one the Yankee pitchers broke a wrist, even more if it were Mariano Riviera.

You obviously don't understand the Redsox Yankees rivalry. I was "beside myself with glee" also. Any time a Yankee goes down its a great day. It has nothing to do with sportsmanship, it all has to do with the rivalry.

I don't really think that Sox fan meant she was glad he broke his wrist, just glad he's out for possibly the rest of the season.
But I do understand your concern.
I worry my son won't be a good sport if he keeps seeing others making
"in-your-face" comments to opposing team's fans.

Yes, sportsmanship went out of the windoe long time ago, and we have allowed prejudice to take over.
I think most people will admit, this will be to the detriment of both the sportsmen and women and the spectators.
